Preparing for the Interview
Every interview is a learning curve and good experience as you’ll learn something about the process each time and what you could do differently next time? Don’t let one bad interview put you off; keep trying. If you find that you’re unsuccessful several times over, perhaps you need to consider the level you’re applying at, further qualifications you may need, or even ask one of the companies you applied for to find out why you were unsuccessful. Don’t let it knock you back completely – you need your confidence for interviews!
Also check out www.careers.govt.nz – a great government website that has much more information relating to writing CV’s, application letters and interviewing.
- Go online and research the employer’s website to get some information and be informed.
- Make sure to take any original documents they’ve specifically requested (e.g. degree, certificates, passport, written references)
- Rehearse talking about yourself (e.g. your strengths, weaknesses, what attracts you to the desired role)
- Prove you’re motivated by having questions prepared for the interviewer
- Be presentable, and dress appropriately for the job you’re applying for
- Be on time – if you’re unsure about the location and parking, make sure you give yourself some spare time just in case
- Be confident, make it clear in answering questions why you think you’re the one for the job
- Don’t inquire about pay, package benefits (car, phone) or holidays at the first interview
- Try to stay relaxed! And take a quick moment to think and reflect on the question before answering! Remember it’s okay to be nervous – you’re only human.
- What interests you about this job?
- Why should we employ you over other applicants?
- How could you contribute to this company?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Tell me about the most difficult customer service/sales/office situation you have handled.
- Why did you leave your last employer?
